Do I Really Need Travel Insurance?

Many often ask this question. They view travel insurance as extra costs, which could be avoided. But the reality is that – travel insurance offers you a huge peace of mind, knowing that you are covered if something unexpected happens or your trip does not go as per plan.

Dealing with a medical emergency, delayed luggage, or getting robbed, can be expensive and challenging to deal with, especially when you are away from home, in a faraway destination. In some cases, you might need professional medical or legal help. This is where travel cover comes to your rescue. Here are a few reasons why travel insurance is mandatory:

  • Your domestic health insurance most likely does not provide coverage for any medical expenses that you might incur overseas.
  • Medical evacuation can cost $50,000 or more, depending on your medical condition and location.
  • Millions of pieces of baggage are lost or mislaid by airlines every year.
  • Travelers are more likely to lose their passports, licenses, credit cards, and phones while traveling.
  • Flight delays or cancellations are more frequent than you think.
  • Travel scams are extremely common in popular tourist destinations.

How Does Travel Insurance Work?

In the simplest terms, travel insurance is your protection when you face any unexpected or unforeseen circumstances while traveling domestically or internationally. Depending on the type of travel insurance plan you have purchased, you enjoy coverage for a variety of situations, including:

  • medical emergencies
  • lost passports
  • canceled flights
  • lost or delayed luggage

Usually, you pay for these costs out of your pocket, and the insurer reimburses the costs upon claim approval. You can file a claim by providing proof of documentation, such as a medical bill or police report, to confirm that the incident occurred. Alternatively, some travel plans do not require you to pay upfront costs. You can get treated overseas at approved hospitals without paying any extra fees.

Always read the policy wording carefully before purchasing a travel insurance policy to understand what is covered and whether it meets your specific requirements.

I Have Medical Insurance. Do I Need Travel Insurance?

Unfortunately, your domestic health insurance including Medicare does NOT usually provide you coverage outside the US. According to the U.S. Department of State, “Medicare does not cover the costs of medical care you receive while traveling overseas.” So, if you face any critical medical emergency and require extensive treatment or medical evacuation back home, you need a standalone travel insurance policy.

It is crucial that you are covered for existing medical conditions, when traveling overseas. Make sure to let us know about your medical conditions, so we can help you find the best travel plan that offers complete coverage your specific requirements.

Even if you are healthy, you might face a situation, where you need travel medical insurance. A standalone travel health plan can offer you help with various situations that occur while traveling domestically and overseas such as:

  • Slip and fall injuries
  • Food poisoning
  • Car accidents
  • Contagious diseases such as Covid-19, typhoid, Zika, measles, yellow fever, malaria, etc.*

*These are examples of commonly covered illnesses. Make sure to check your policy document for details.
